FANCL Calorie Limit and Ozempic do different jobs

Your feed shows one person losing weight on an injection and another holding a green FANCL pouch before dinner. The pouch looks gentler. It is also easier to order.

They belong in different categories: one supports a meal, while the other is prescription treatment.

Singapore has good reason to take weight seriously. The share of residents with obesity rose from 10.5% to 12.7%, and the increase among adults aged 18 to 29 was close to double. Those numbers explain why shortcuts look tempting.

Start with the correct medicine

Ozempic and Wegovy contain the same active medicine, semaglutide, but they are registered for different uses in Singapore. Ozempic is for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy is the version used for weight management in people who meet its medical criteria. Both belong to a family called GLP-1 medicines, which copy a gut hormone involved in appetite and blood sugar.

Wegovy works on appetite and food cravings. It is prescribed alongside changes to food and activity, with the dose increased slowly under medical guidance.

FANCL's Otona no Calorie Limit is a food supplement. Otona means "adult" in Japanese. FANCL makes no appetite claim for it, and it is not a treatment for obesity.

What the green FANCL pouch says

FANCL's Japanese notification is about how the body handles sugar and fat after a meal. The adult version also contains black ginger and carries an additional Japanese claim about abdominal fat in people with a higher body mass index, or BMI. Singapore rules do not allow a health supplement to be promoted as a treatment for obesity.

Japan calls this a Food with Function Claims. The company submits its safety and evidence information before sale, but the government does not evaluate or approve the finished product. FANCL says so on the product page: this is not medicine.

Compare the evidence

A major Wegovy trial followed 1,961 adults for 68 weeks. Average weight changed by 14.9% with semaglutide and 2.4% with placebo, with lifestyle support in both groups. A separate trial involving 17,604 people with existing heart disease found fewer heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart or blood vessel disease with semaglutide than with placebo.

Those benefits came with side effects. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation are common. Inflammation of the pancreas or gall bladder is rare but serious. In the 68-week trial, 4.5% of participants stopped semaglutide because of stomach or bowel problems, compared with 0.8% on placebo.

Semaglutide can produce substantial weight loss, and some users stop because of side effects. The evidence does not support calling the whole class a disaster or marketing a Japanese supplement as natural Ozempic.

How supplement safety works in Singapore

HSA does not evaluate health supplements before they reach a Singapore shelf. The importer and seller are responsible for safety, quality and labeling. HSA also warns that some supplements bought online have contained undeclared prescription ingredients or banned substances.

HSA's warning covers the wider online market. For any supplement, check the exact product, seller and sealed pack instead of trusting the word "natural".

Otona no Calorie Limit contains crab-derived chitosan. FANCL says children and anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should not take it. If you use medication or manage an ongoing health condition, show the pack to a doctor or pharmacist first.

Can you already buy it in Singapore?

Sort of. Singapore marketplace listings appear in search results, but Amazon's exact 30-serving listing is currently unavailable. Watsons' current FANCL brand page lists no products, and we could not verify a dedicated local release for this pouch.

Choose by the problem you have

If your weight is affecting your health, speak to a doctor. That conversation can cover food, activity, sleep, medication and whether a GLP-1 medicine is appropriate for you.

If you are a healthy adult looking at FANCL for occasional meal support, judge it by the modest job written on its Japanese pack. Follow the serving, check the crab allergen and do not expect prescription-level weight loss.
