The tiny Japanese charm that helps you spot your umbrella

The rain stops just as you reach the office. You leave your wet black umbrella in the rack. At six o'clock, there are twelve black umbrellas waiting for you.

Which one is yours?

Japan's answer is a tiny character charm called a mejirushi accessory. The name roughly means a marker: something that lets you recognise your umbrella at a glance.

A collectible with an actual job

Mejirushi charms usually come with a soft ring and a small clasp. The ring can sit around an umbrella handle or bottle, while the clasp can hook onto a pouch or pencil case. Instead of buying another ornament for the shelf, you give an everyday object a face.

One ¥300 capsule can solve a small daily annoyance and carry a character you already like.

They do not make an umbrella theft-proof, and a charm can still fall off. Their job is simpler: helping you recognise your own item before you walk away with somebody else's.

What Bandai released this month

Bandai's August Sanrio releases use character costumes instead of plain name tags. The Fruit Mejirushi series turns Hello Kitty into an apple, Pompompurin into a pineapple and Kuromi into a mangosteen. A second series, Solid & Cool, puts five characters into black streetwear.

Both sets have five designs, and each turn of the Japanese capsule machine costs ¥300. You do not choose which character comes out. The random pull is what turns a practical marker into a collection.

Bandai lists the Fruit series for the second week of August and Solid & Cool for the third. Another release, Emo Kyun 2, is currently listed for September. If you are buying from outside Japan, check Bandai's current product page rather than trusting an old social post or shop listing.

Choose the charm before the character

Start with where you will use it. A pale charm is easy to see on a black umbrella. A clasp is more useful for a pouch. A flexible ring is better for a bottle or umbrella handle. Check the photos of the attachment, not only the character lineup.

Then decide whether surprise is part of the fun. If any character would make you happy, one capsule is enough. If you want one exact design or the complete set, buying random capsules can become an expensive chase. Look for a clearly identified full set from a trusted seller instead.

These are small collectibles with small parts. Bandai labels the current Sanrio releases for ages 15 and above, so keep them away from young children.

Check Singapore sellers first. If the exact design is already here at a sensible total price, local delivery is easier.
