Pokémon TCG at 30: what a Singapore beginner should buy
You spot a sealed Japanese Pokémon box online. The comments are flying, the price is climbing, and everyone seems to understand the fuss except you.
Hold off on the panic buy. The 30th Celebration card set arrives in Singapore on 16 September as part of the game's first coordinated worldwide release. You can start without the Japanese edition.

Why the cards still work
The Pokémon card game began in Japan in October 1996. One card can do two jobs: help you win a battle and give you a small piece of artwork to keep.
Collectors and players can stand at the same counter looking for completely different things. One wants a stronger deck. Another wants every Pikachu. Plenty of people simply enjoy opening a pack and seeing what turns up.
This anniversary set gives collectors plenty to look for. Every card is foil. Each booster pack includes one of 30 Pikachu illustrations and a foil Basic Energy. Thirty classic cards return too. A new Futuristic rare style begins with Mew and Mewtwo artwork by Japanese artist YOSHIROTTEN.
The game in 30 seconds
Two players battle with their own decks. You put a Pokémon into play, attach Energy, and attack your opponent's Pokémon. Knock one out and you take a Prize Card. Take all your Prize Cards first and you win.
Rare cards will not teach you any faster. Singapore's official New Trainer Journey sessions teach beginners with demo decks, and the current calendar includes universities and Toys R Us locations. A ready-to-play deck is a sensible first purchase if you want to learn.
Should you chase the Japanese box?
The Japanese edition makes sense for someone who specifically wants Japanese cards. At Pokémon Center Japan, however, the 30th Celebration box was not offered through normal checkout. Its first lottery ran from 10 to 14 August and has closed. Another lottery is planned, but no date has been announced. Delivery is limited to Japan.
Singapore receives the anniversary set on the same launch date. Before paying extra for an imported box, decide whether you want to play, collect the artwork, or own the Japanese print.

Pokémon Center Japan is also releasing Timeless Adventure anniversary goods based on different regions and generations of the games. New items are being added through the year.

Both product pages currently allow normal ordering. Pokémon Center Japan only delivers inside Japan, which is where Bazu Mart's sourcing service is useful.
